Among all the Sankranti, Makar Sankranti, which is falling on 14 January'2012 is the biggest Sankranti. It is called Makar Sankraanti, because from this day the Sun begins his northward journey (Uttaraayan) - he enters the sign of Makar (Capricorn).

This day has a very special significance because from this day the night hours starts getting decreased and the day hours getting increased. This day is celebrated as a festival right from the times of the Aaryans and is looked upon as the most auspicious day by the Hindu. Makar Sankranti is also a major harvest festival celebrated in various parts of India.


Til laddu is a common traditional recipe for Sankranti, a festival that marks the beginning of Spring or the harvest season. It is called Pongal in the South, Bhugali Bihu in Assam, Bhogi in Andhra Pradesh and Sankranti in the central part of the Country.

In Northern region of India, especially in Panjaab and Hariyaanaa, Lohri signifies the harvesting of Rabee
crops. Lohri falls on 13th of January, a day before Sankraanti. The essence of celebration of Lohri festival is to light a bonfire and a prayer is made to Agni, the god of Fire, and Prasad is distributed.The prasad comprises  mainly of  Til and
Gachak .In the western Indian state of Gujarat, the celebrations are even bigger, before the actual day of Makar Sankranti, about the end of December, kids and young people start enjoying Uttarayan. Undhiyu (mixed winter vegetable) and chikkis (made from til (sesame), peanuts and jaggery) are the special festival recipes savoured on this day and they keenly await this festival to offer thousands of their colorful oblations to the Sun in the form of beautiful kites.
