Getting a sprinkling of divinity with Gangajal

For centuries now, Gangajal has been viewed as a symbol of purity by Hindus across the world. What may seem like plain river water to the rest of the world, gangajal actually holds a special significance and value in the Hindu heart. Flowing down the pristine valleys of the Himalayas, it is said to not only carry the essence of herbs and an essential mix of minerals, but also possess the power to cure various ailments of the body and soul.

It has been said in the ‘Agni-Purana’ that wherever this water from the Holy river of Ganges reaches, that place is washed of its evils and rendered sacred. For this reason, millions of Hindu households begin their day at home or work only after sprinkling a good dose of Ganga water. It is also believed that to reap the complete benefits of a puja, it is essential to include gangajal in the same. This is why gangajal is used in most religious ceremonies and rituals, to make the entire experience ‘pavitra’.

They say that drinking, bathing in or sprinkling gangajal helps purify the place or person. Used from birth to marriage and even death, Ganga water holds sentimental and sacred value in the Hindu household. Due to its believed medicinal properties, it is said to alleviate ailments ranging from stomach ache, to skin diseases, blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and even cancer in its initial stages. It is also said that no matter how long you store gangajal, it does not have any effect on its spiritual or medicinal properties.
